"What's The Worst That Could Happen?"Nathan James, acrylic and oil on canvas, 2008An exhibition glimpsing at ruins, old wrecks and ramshackle worlds. Initially inspired by the most dramatic and perverse financial crisis of the last 40 years, the show will examine the subsequent risk, collapse isolation and destruction. However, no matter how tragic the subject matter, the journey never loses it's sense of humour, charm and a will to fight.
Seven young London based artists, with incredibly different and far reaching perspectives, are gathered according to two clashing curatorial viewpoints: aiming to exploit the force of the contrast, between the superficial proposal of bight pop sensibilities and darker, more severe outcomes.
Each work approaches crisis, danger and their instability from very opposing perspectives, declining their finest and most dramatic aspects.
At the base there's the belief, which every artist stages in his particular way, that in front of every collapse and annihilation, in front of these sudden changes that seem to question about everything til the total loss of every reference, you can always find the possibility to go back, if not to the order (value anything but unquestionable) to the nature constructive and innovative of a new word.
At the very core, which each artists demonstrates in their own particular way, is a sense that at the fore of any collapse or annihilation, in the very nature of such change is deep and total questioning until every possible reference becomes buried. From that perspective emerges an intriguing idea that there is always a possibility of return, however when the inherent value of anything is under question the return to a constructive and innovative new world.
This feat of course can only be faced with courage, and bravery as an essential counterbalance to each critical and artistic attempt. However, this sense stems from resigning it's own safety in complete acceptance of the imminent and inescapable danger that must be faced, in order to love the beauty of things as they fall apart.
